The Maryland Heights Area

West of St. Louis is the suburb of Maryland Heights, Missouri, which is named after the Maryland state natives who first settled the area.  The rolling hills on the northeast side of the city were a factor in their decision to settle in the area; due to the fact that it reminded them of the landscape of Maryland.  It became the official name in 1914.

Europeans who began settling the area in the 1700’s were met by resistance from Indians that forced them to fortify the area to defend themselves from Indian attacks.  Then end of World War II marks a period of change for Maryland Heights.  A rise in population, the formation of suburbs, neighborhood developments, and annexation with neighboring towns, significantly transformed the essence of the area.

In the 1950’s and 60’s, roadway construction projects further developed the area with major road ways such as Lindbergh Blvd, Midland Ave, and Dorsett Rd.  Major highways constructed during this period include I-70 and I-270.
